Each crew needs to elect a "Team Captain"...this may or may not be the steerer.  This team captain will be responsible for delegating tasks to the crew members and ensuring that all details are covered.

 Team Captain Responsibilities:

1.  Go to the host club race web site and familiarize yourself with all aspects and details of the event.  Note any special requirements that may be needed for this particular race (will the boats be weighed? will you need to add weight to the canoe? what safety equipment is required?, etc.)

2.  Print off the waivers and registration forms, collect cash and signatures.

3.  Collect $

4.  Make sure your canoe has everything it needs for the weekend:

  • Before you de-rig for boat loading ...check how your boat is rigged so you know exactly how to duplicate it...
  • Rubber any shims in place if possible so they don't get lost.
  • Check the rope rigging on the ama for wear.
  • 6 PFDs, a bucket and 2 good small bailers... (make 1 person responsible for the bailers...do not leave them in the canoe on the trailer...they may go missing!)

5.  Find out when the coaches want all athletes at the race venue and make sure everyone knows the scoop.  Unloading the canoe and rigging will take a bit of time, so make sure your crew is dialed in.

6.  Delegate race day/morning tasks to crew members.  Please note that all steerers should have minimal/no tasks on the morning of a race...their job is to learn everything they can about the course, talk to locals, attend the steerers meeting, work with coaches, etc.  If you are a steerer and you are team captain, please delegate well to keep your morning clear.

Race Day Tasks :

  • 6 PFDs in canoe (secured so that water can flow under them)
  • one (at least) spare paddle bungied on iako (who is bringing the spare?)
  • rigging the canoe / taping
  • waxing hull floor
  • huli cord?
  • check bulkheads and ama for water
  • Bailers - in place and secure
  • Each crew should have their own basic rigging kit....do not rely on others for rigging supplies please!       (tape measure, level, duct tape, spare rubbers, ama weights, multi head screw driver, wax, rags, box cutter knife, bungies for spare paddle, etc.)
